How Can I Convince My Dad To Switch Me From Piano Lessons To Drums?

My dad is trying to make me get farther in piano before he puts me in drums, that will take AGES. I want to take drum lesson in the fall. I hate piano, it’s so much work. Drums are easier and they sound better.

Just tell him, you want to expand you musical knowledge and variation with aims of maybe being a proffesional musician.
He cant really complain about that!

To be honest, I agree with your fathers point of view, and so would you in the long run. Piano is a great instrument to learn and if you learn it well with the proper discipline, you will be set up well for a whole variety of other instruments. Piano teaches you all of the fundmental ingredients that make up an all around musician; dynamics, control, limb independance, finger independance, perserverance….
If I were you, I would stick with the piano, and work hard at it. Ask your dad whether you’d be able to play drums if you agreed to keep up the work on the piano. I’m telling you….it will pay off.

I’m not sure if drum are easier than piano since I play neither, but I’m pretty sure they don’t sound better to a parent! Drums aren’t melodic at all…but if you want to convince them to get you into drums, mount a couple cymbals on that baby grand and start beating the crap out of them…that might do it!

Can you take both for a while? Then when you can convince your father that you are really a better drummer, he may see it your way.
