Drum Lessons: My 12-year Old Son Wants To Get Started. What Should We Do First?
Do we need to buy a drum set? How much will it cost? Can we get it used? How can I find a good teacher? Should he just bang around for a while? Thanks for any sugestions.

Forget the lessons and save some money. Get him a drum set and let him learn on his own. Let him use headphones while playing along with the tunes……………………………..…

He needs lessons and structure to learn. Banging around won’t help. Don’t buy a drum set. Get a small electronc drum thingy. Get a good teacher (you can take lessons at most music or drum stores). Our newspapers also have ads for drum lessons. Then after your son proves he will practice and stick with it then consider the drum set. The teachers usually will know of a good one for sale and be able to recommend. But right now it may just be a fantasy. make sure it’s a reality before you buy anything really expensive. And make him earn a lot of the money, too. by doing chores. make him work for what he wants.

Look into your middle school band program. He will learn how to read music, play, get performing experience, and exposure to a lot of different types of music. The instruction is free and will give him new friends and goals. The band director will tell you what he needs to start. Many music stores have programs that allow you to purchase equipment on a plan.
And as his ability grows and he merits it you can purchase expanded equipment.
Band was the best thing about school for me.

Yeah why not?
Save for a drum kit and let him bang around.
