its hard to say what to expect from a teacher. everyone likes to teach their own ways. out of the 4 that i have had, 2 liked to teach me by actually having me play along with songs. they let me choose some songs that i wanted to learn, and they also gave me suggestions on songs that they thought were good and in my playing ability. the other 2 teachers relied heavily on rudiments. both aspects are good for any aspiring drummer, but i would recommend both. tell the teacher you are interested in learning all your basic rudiments. then tell him you want to learn how to apply them to a full drumset. also, figure out a few songs before hand that you have always wanted to learn on the drums and then see if he can teach them to you. a good instructor should be able to do all of this.
    good luck!

It totally depends on what you want to do. If you just want to keep time and do some decent fills, you can get a song pretty solid in a month with lessons. Otherwise you can go for years just learning rudiments on a snare and have incredible independence, but never played a song. I’d go somewhere in the middle
