MY LESSON RANT TO THE LADY ABOVE
Their are no constraints of do’s and don’t with lessons. Lessons give the foundation upon which everything is built. Any rule can be broken to suit any need, just as it can be broken without lessons. The only difference is you have a foundation upon which everything you do is built.
As far as the greatest players never having lessons, how much better would they have been with lessons from someone whom is better then they are.
Their is always something to learn. You learn from those whom are better then you. I don’t care if you are Jimi Hendrix or not. You learn from people whom are better then you are.
Those whom refuse to admit this are just silly.
You can learn on the Internet, Isn’t this considered lessons too? If you learn it from someone else rather on the Internet or in person, it is still a lesson.
Only difference is getting lessons from a real, live, person blows the Internet away.
Lesson are nothing more then sitting down with another person whom is better then you are and learning something from them.
Any person who thinks sitting down with another person and learning something from them is a bad thing , is rather a fool themselves.
Any good player knows you always sit down with those whom are better then you. I dont care if you are Jimi Hendrix or John Bonham
It has become popular to knock lessons. That is no different then saying “I refuse to learn from those whom are better then me”
    It is the same thing
If you feel you need lessons , then get them. Do not let this popular culture of saying you don’t need to sit down with people whom are better then yourself and learn something ,get in the way of you being the best you can be

I have been playing professionally for several years, and this is still going to be just ANOTHER opinion. The one thing I have learned through out my life is you can learn from anyone. As someone posted above, they said if they are better, that is not always the case, I have learned things from people just starting to play since everyone has their own style.
As far as timing, timing is just something you can not be taught, in one or two lessons, timing will be a life long lesson. Now for Technical tricks and 4/4 2/4 beats and so on, an instructor will give you a great foundation to build from, but with anything, it will always be up to you on what you do with the knowledge someone has passed on to you.
If you gain timing, and become like a metronome, you will never have any problems finding some where or someone to gig with, even if the flash isn’t there.
I guess what I am basically saying is learn from anyone and everyone you can, it will not and can not hurt you any, it is up to you with what you take from it. If you go into any thing with an attitude you will not learn anything new, then you are actually going to become unteachable.
On a side note, for Rock and metal, just feel it, rock it, and with all music, have fun with it.

Nope, you don’t need lessons as far as I’m concerned. :)
Some of the best musicians I know are self-taught and not stuck within the constraints of classical do’s and don’ts. :)
The great thing about rhythm is that you can feel it. Just keep going at it, my boyfriend and his friend are great guitar players but neither of them can really read notes. (Boyfriend can a little because he had piano lessons way back when, but his friend can’t read it at all, that i know of…)
    Good luck!

Please get instruction. It isn’t a lifetime commitment, even though it could be.
The most important factor is to find a teacher that you can work with and respect. Lesson from someone that you do not respect are a waste of time and money.

That will let you down, as you will be out of time, and unable to sight read music.

Lesson will give you technic that you won’t be able to hear on a recording.
